Hello friends!

I’m excited today to be a part of the #SingleTruth blog tour and free book giveaway with Allison Flexer. Allison will be guest posting on my blog and listing 3 truths for single women in college. At the end of the post, I’ll be raffling off a free signed copy of her new book, Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman (Beacon Hill Press). Make sure you enter the giveaway and tell your friends!

Out of all the books for single ladies out there, I have to say that this one is my favorite. Allison is honest, relate-able, and spot on with truth. During the week, I will be tweeting some of my favorite quotes from the book and tweeting the giveaway. I hope you take away some encouragement!

xoxo Joy

3 Truths for the Single Women in College – Allison Flexer.

College has changed quite a bit since I was a student at a small, Christian university. In some ways, the environment of a Christian college can feel safe. It’s okay to be a follower of Christ because most of your fellow students believe the same things as you. Or do they?

I discovered that keeping up appearances was very important at my college. Let me explain. If my friends and I didn’t make it to church one Sunday morning (maybe we slept in and attended on Sunday evening or skipped altogether), we still felt the need to dress up when going to eat Sunday lunch in the cafeteria. Otherwise, we felt judged. Not very authentic, right?

Regardless of the type of university, your college years are a time when it’s easy to become distracted by impressing others. When you go away to college, it’s usually a new environment away from the people you’ve known for years. You can recreate yourself if you so desire. When you meet new people, maybe even guys you want to date, how do you present yourself?

My new book, Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman, covers 10 lies that single woman may believe and the truth that offsets those lies. Today, I want to share 3 Truths specifically for single women in college.

1) You are beautiful. Don’t let others define your standard of beauty. You’re a beautiful woman, made in God’s image. God created you exactly the way you are for a specific purpose. He wove you together. You are his masterpiece. Don’t hand the power to others and allow them to influence how you see yourself. We’re so hard on ourselves. When I start thinking negative thoughts about myself, I have to immediately stop and refuse to allow those thoughts to completely form in my mind. I quote 2 Corinthians 10:5, which tells me to “take captive every thought” and “make it obedient to Christ.”

2) God has a plan for you. Don’t settle for less in your dating life or otherwise! If you’re compromising your values, you’re settling for less. God has a beautiful plan for your life. He cares about the details, including whom you date. Seek God and trust him to show up. That may mean saying no to some dates or waiting for longer than you would like for that special guy. And that’s okay. The Message version of the Bible shares truth in Matthew 6:33: “Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”

3) Church is not just for families. Seek a community while in college. Don’t give up going to church while you’re in college. Find a community of believers in some form. You don’t have to choose the same type of church you grew up attending. Branch out and ask questions. Discover your own faith and use this time to develop your personal relationship with God. Ask him to show you his love and mercy. Seek new ways to connect with God and other believers. James 4:8 (NKJV) reads, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

I pray you will seek God’s truth during your college experience. The Bible is a great place to find truth to guide your decisions and your life.

Remember, God has a plan for you!

I absolutely LOVE #3. Some of the girls I mentor entered into college last year and wrote to me asking for advice about finding a church, and I gave them that same advice (except worded less well).
